WAE-TOP Plaque received

100_1098Friday I found my WAE-TOP plaque in the post box. 🙂 WAE stands for Worked All Europe, a challenging awards program by DARC. I had applied for the WAE award already a few years ago but to go for the plaque or even trophy entirely through DCL, DARC’s Contest Logbook, takes quite a while. So even the plaque was applied for using only electronic confirmations from DCL itself as well as LotW confirmations imported into DCL. I certainly could have applied for it much earlier using my paper cards but everything lies unsorted in my cupboard. To sort everything thru and make it a system is a job I can do when getting pension in some 30+ years. 😉 Many thanks to Wolfgang, DF8AA, who serves as the awards manager and did a nice job once again.

QSL of the month

g7pzl-qslJust digging through the latest pile of QSL cards received via the bureau. One that caught my eye immediately was the confirmation of a 2 m QSO from England. What makes it so special is that Andy, G7PZL, was running just 2 watts into a small 4 ele Yagi (certainly QRPpp on VHF) to work these 1.036 km. That is not going to happen very often. We had a strong tropospheric duct the week before Christmas 2007 and could work lots of DX back then for several days, was quite some fun. This is why I like paper cards! They make you remember all those special contacts you had, some pleasure an electronic confirmation will never be able to provide (although I like LotW and DCL, too, as they make awards chasing much much easier).

ARRLDX-CW … some fun on 10m

qsl_remote_1

I had planned to go the 700 km to our contest QTH (JO73ce) to participate in ARRLDX-CW this year. Due to QRL on Monday I could not take the day off to drive back so I had to cancel my plans. Nevertheless I wanted to hand out a few points at least so was QRV with my small remote station setup: Icom IC-7100, Elecraft KPA500 + small 4 ele Yagi @ 8 m height. It is completely separated from the rest of the station to avoid trouble with local usage by other OPs … but for the moment only 10, 6 & 2 m are available remotely, so it had to be 10 m. 😉

What can I say? Conditions were quite nice on Saturday. So my plan of doing maybe 50 QSOs each day had to be revisited. 😉 Saturday concentrated on working as many US states as possible (full sweep anyone?) so almost all day just S&P’ing. Finished with just missing DC, DE, KY, OR, WY. I had heard OR & WY already but pileups were too big to spend much time there. Caught DE & KY on Sunday but due to Aurora the condx were much worse on Sunday so never heard any OR or WY again. Also never ran across a DC, was there nobody QRV on 10 m this time? On the other hand I sometimes felt like participating in the Maryland QSO Party … 😉

arrldxcwmultsBand opened 11.15z on Saturday here with VY2ZM & VE9AA, the usual suspects. 😉 Closed around 19z after a nice hour running mid-west and west coast stations. Sunday was distinctly worse with 12:30z opening and 18z closing and no west coast at all, i.e. California. Just a very weak WA and a few likewise weak AZ stations. Concentrated a bit more on running on Sunday just for the fun of it. Finished the weekend with 517 QSOs and 55 mult’s (see left). Also had a few breaks for coffee and telephone in-between. So about 14 h spent on & off the radio.

Did about five times as much as I originally wanted to do. 🙂 Boy, I wish I could have been at the contest QTH. Our 6 ele OWA @ 20 m height gives about 2 s-units better signals than the small remote antenna mounted much lower. And the K3 would have coped much much better with all the contest QRM than the IC-7100 did … But after all still a lot of fun, it’s all about using and enjoying 10 m as long as it still lasts, isn’t it?! 😉 As there are no single band assisted categories in ARRLDX this single band effort goes into the all band unlimited category. No CAT control, no skimmer, but a few cluster spots at times so …

Will be at the big station for ARRLDX-SSB in two weeks, let’s keep fingers crossed for condx to return! Hope to hear you then!

EU-DX-D TROPHY

Thanks to the superb award application possibilities of DCL I was able to apply for my EU-DX-D trophy electronically, using confirmations from DARC contests as well as LotW. Dietmar, DL3DXX, who’s not only a well known DXer and DXpeditioner but also the EU-DX-D award manager, did a fast job to let the plaque being engraved and sent over to me. Received it last Saturday, thanks Dietmar!

Amsterdam Island FT/Z worked

ftz_weblogoWas lucky enough to catch the current FT5ZM expedition for an all time new one on a few slots. Pileups are very intense but the OPs are doing real good work. Thanks for a fine job, guys! Enjoy the expedition and have a save trip back home.

Mt. Athos SV/A confirmed

sv2asp_a_1sv2asp_a_2

Had the nice folding QSL of SV2ASP/A in the mailbox today. I was lucky enough to work him via Sporadic E on 6 m in summer 2011 and then again on 10 m in autumn. Mount Athos is a separate DXCC entity and thus quite sought after. Finally got around to send a direct QSL just before Christmas (unfortunately he’s not a bureau member). Thanks for a really rare one and god bless you, Monk Apollo!

5BWAC CW received

5bwacJust got the mail from DCL (DARC Contest Logbook) that my 5 band WAC is ready for download as PDF. In that variant it is completely free of charge if applied for through DCL. If you want a printed copy sent to you just pay 5 EUR to DARC. For me the PDF version is sufficient and I can still print it myself if ever needed. 😉

Really a nice service of DARC on behalf of IARU. DCL contains confirmed QSOs from DARC contests that can be used to apply electronically for several DARC awards. Besides this it is also possible to import your confirmed contacts from ARRL’s LoTW (Logbook of The World).

Israel 4X confirmed on 2 m

4x1if-qslJust digging through the pile of QSLs received via the bureau last month and almost made a jump out of my chair. 😉 Finally received the card of Ralph, 4X1IF, whom I worked in May 2010 on 2 m via Sporadic E. That’s a whopping 2.863 km for terrestrial propagation, i.e. no EME or satellites! Remember the contact quite well as we were outside just starting to mount the recently bought Cushcraft X7 beam. I had to go inside to grab some wrenches when I heard a weak CW signal on 144.300 MHz. Couldn’t believe my ears when I identified 4X1IF calling CQ – Sporadic E + tropo extension over the Mediterranean Sea! Guys outside got angry waiting for me but cooled down quite soon after hearing what was going on and finally working their first 4X on 2 m as well. 😉 Nice ODX and and always nice to remember such once in a life-time occassions. Thanks a lot Ralph for replying to my card and supporting the bureau system.

VK2DX QSL received / applied for 5BWAC

vk2dx-qslFinally received my first VK QSL on 80m. Usually I would not send any card direct to countries that have a working QSL bureau. But had to make an exception for VK2DX as he’s my only Oceania station on 80 m so far and I was really keen to finally apply for 5 band WAC. So I bit the bullet and sent a card with $3 for return postage to Nick.

Just scanned the card and sent it to the German WAC award manager DL1DUO. All other confirmations are there electronically in DARC’s DCL so to apply for the award was just an “a few clicks” action. Can really recommend DCL for such stuff!

Hello world! ;-)

Seems WP is running fine. Old project pages are still available. Will try to move all old content into the new structure soon. Due to lots of QRL it might still take a while. But hey, you still find everything. 😉

WordPress up and running …

Just installed WordPress into my webspace. It’s 5 minutes install is really great and easy. If I only would have known before how easy it is I would have installed it much earlier already. 😉 Now trying out all the features before putting it “online” for the root domain …
